Nigel Baines

Nigel Baines

Documentary Filmmaker | Videographer | Sound Recordist

Working under the banner of Minus 20 Music, Nigel makes high quality, natural sounding audio-visual recordings of contemporary, jazz and classical music. He also collaborates with musicians on documentary projects, websites, concerts, festivals and podcasts.

Nigel is currently working on his fourth music documentary. The film is part of a multi-year project Nigel initiated to record and celebrate the music of Boyd McDonald, one of Canada’s most prolific and inventive composers, whose career in music spans more than 8 decades.

Nigel’s films have been aired on TVO, TFO and TV5 Monde. He studied the art and technique of filmmaking at London Film School (England) and FEMIS (France), and English Literature at McGill University.

Earlier in his career, Nigel worked in advertising at Anderson DDB, Euro RSCG and as a Global Strategic Planner and Creative Director at Publicis Life Brands (Paris) and Saatchi and Saatchi Health (Paris). Nigel continues to utilise his design and advertising skills to help musicians, concert organizers and music festivals get the word out about their events through both print, web and social media.

Nigel’s Inspiration

On a business trip to Geneva 20 years ago, Nigel boarded the plane with sinus congestion. Mid-flight the airplane lost cabin pressure. The pain and pressure in his ears and sinuses was excruciating. When he got off the plane, he had tinnitus. As a tinnitus patient and someone who depends on his hearing to create natural sounding recordings of music, Nigel is excited to be collaborating with Michele Wilmot and Classical Keys on their important project investigating optimal hearing aid solutions for musicians coping with hearing loss.
